Music 839B: Twelve Approaches to Music Analysis

Course Description



Course Description:

Students will learn how to approach and critique musical works from several contrasting perspectives, including that of a Hollywood producer, a Soviet-era Marxist, a feminist, a church pastor, a cultural anthropologist, a postmodernist, a sociobiologist, a behavioral ecologist, as well as other perspectives.

Analytic approaches will include functionalism, hermeneutics, memetics, idiomaticism, evolutionism, anthropology, fashion, cognitivism, commerce, socialist realism, critical theory and postmodernism.

Music 839B is offered as 3 credit-hour course. If you wish to take this course for 5 credit hours, please enroll in Music 693 (Individualized Studies) call number 13676-8 I. Additional course assignments will be required for those students wishing to take the course for 5 credit hours.


Pre-Requisites:

The course has no formal pre-requisites. Graduate standing is required.


Meeting Times:

Classes are held on the Ohio State University Campus. For the Winter 2004 quarter, the class will be meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:18 PM in the Music & Dance Library, seminar room 066.

Course Objectives:

The primary objective of Music 839B is to expose students to a variety of conceptual perspectives for understanding music. Problems in relating each perspective to the organization of the music will be stressed.


Approach:

The course objectives are pursued through classroom lectures, demonstrations, and class discussions.
