Listening Modes



  • What evidence do we have that people experience music differently?

  • Apparent through introspection (see handout).

  • Does the word "but" occur in the lyrics to Row, Row, Row Your Boat?

  • Memory Scan Listening.
    • Don't need sound to have a cognitive representation for music.
    • A task initiated by conscious control.
    • No random musical access available.

  • Fault Listening.

  • Non-teleological listening:
    The chess master plays many more games than are realized on the chessboard.
