Performance Memory & Sleep

What sort of sleep is important for performers?

  • sleep known to be important in "cementing" memory

  • declarative vs. procedural memory

  • Cementing of declarative memory occurs primarily in first 4 hours of sleep. Cementing of procedural memory occurs primarily in last 4 hours of sleep. (Plihal, 1996)

  • Law students studying for an exam should go to bed at their regular time, and get up early for additional study.

  • Performers studying a new piece may stay up late, but should sleep-in.
