Why Do We Hear Pitch?



  • pitch involves a complex transformation from frequency domain (plus other things)

  • but frequency is straightforwardly available at the auditory periphery

  • pitch is strongly correlated with "objecthood"

  • identifying sound-producing objects is more valuable than identifying frequencies

  • brains experience pitch rather than frequency because pitch is evolutionarily more adaptive
