The Pleasures of Prediction

  1. accurate expectations facilitate appropriate action and perception (e.g. Hick-Hyman)

  2. accurate expectations are more biologically adapative than inaccurate expectations

  3. it is appropriate for the brain to reward itself for developing accurate expectations

  4. pleasures and preference are indicators of mental reward

  5. we expect what is most probable (familiar)

  6. therefore, we ought to prefer the familiar
(i.e., exposure effect is consistent with the above logic)
