  • unfolding events can surprise, delight, frighten, bore

  • anticipating events allows preparation for action or perception

  • preparation can reduce dangers, exploit opportunities

  • useful expectations can arise only if the world is predictable

  • wrong expectations can be worse than no expectations:
    E.g. pacific bull-frog

  • are expectations learned or innate?
