Main points of this talk:
  1. Music wouldn't exist without positive emotional responses.

Even when listening to (most) sad music, pleasurable limbic states are being evoked.

  2. The brain contains more than one emotional system.

Many past debates and confusions can be attributed to the failure to recognize that more than one emotional system exists.

  3. Emotions are evolutionary adaptations.

We can better understand emotions by investigating their evolutionary origins.

  4. While some emotional responses are innate, most responses are the result of learning.

Nevertheless, the capacity to learn affective responses is innate.
