Abstract

Music exhibits a multitude of different kinds of structures. Some of these structures reflect acoustical, biological, psychological, historical, idiomatic, political, economic, formal, religious, social, cultural, and other factors. Deciphering different kinds of structures usually requires that we apply different analytic methods. In this lecture, a number of novel analytic methods will be illustrated. I argue that theorists need to develop and master many more methods of analysis if we are to do justice to the rich variety of structures evident in music.
